Encryption is a method to make E-mail messages, data files and electronic-commerce transactions secure. Encoded blocks of data, called keys, are used to lock the message from outside view when it's traveling across the Internet. 14. The International PGP Home Page

PGP (short for Pretty Good Privacy) is a public key encryption program originally written by Phil Zimmermann in 1991. Over the past few years, PGP has got thousands of adherent supporters all over the globe and has become a de-facto standard for encryption of email on the Internet.

There are currently two actively proposed methods for providing these security services: S/MIME and PGP (both in its early incarnation as PGP/MIME, and as the new OpenPGP standard). Other protocols have been proposed in the past (most notably PEM and MOSS), but they did not garner much interest in the market.
